Research that Benefits Children and Families-Uplifting Stories

When I reflect on  research that benefits children and their families in   Early Childhood Education I draw from the data and research from the SEEDS program that is benefiting young children nationwide in increasing early literacy skills and Kindergarten readiness. They have the research and the data that proves that the Big Five transitions when embedded daily into the literacy rich schedule will push children along the road to literacy. The big five transitions are developed through  phonological awareness, concepts of print, alphabet knowledge, vocabulary and background knowledge, and conversation skills. Their  songs  embed letter sounds and letter names, rhyming, alliteration ,the ABC's and their five day  read alouds involve concepts of print, open and closed ended questions, strive for five conversations to increase language development and vocabulary, as well as vocabulary with relia (real objects).Their  interventions include  using sign in,picture naming, rhyming, and alliteration and more extensive interventions for children that need more support. I am a coach in this program and am    living the  research as I see the results daily in the children and the  data that  is collected . It is amazing!

  1. Elizabeth,

Thanks for your great post. I am very much interested in knowing more the advantages of early literacy and the creative ways of including it in my lesson plans. I tried googling SEEDS program but not sure if I found the same website where you got your information. Do you mind sharing it with me and also if you have any other additional resources about this topic. I really really appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Maryam

  2. Elizabeth,

It seems we have a lot in common! I too was a coach for a field test in 2009 in Washington State called Seeds to Success. Since then, I've been an early learning coach and have been a part of the research year 2 (implementation study) and most recently the state wide implementation of QRIS. I agree, it's amazing to be a part of something from day one and to have first hand knowledge of the impact the program makes on children and families. Keep up the good work and I would love to hear more about your experience.

  3. Hi Elizabeth,

I enjoyed reading your post. It sounds like you are part of a quality early childhood program. I love to hear of programs that are research based and have the best interest of the children in mind. I see that we are treding that way in this country right now. Even though we have a long way to go, that makes me happy:)
