Welcoming Families From Around the World

Blog: Welcoming Families From Around the World

The families country of origin that I chose which I know nothing about is China.  Five ways I would try to prepare myself to be  culturally responsive would be to learn their culture and how I can be culturally responsive and respectful.1). I would try to learn some of their language or have a parent, coworker  or someone who can translate the language for the family and me.2). I would learn their mannerisms and what is respectful for them in communicating with others, for example do they make eye contact or look down.3).I would want to meet with the family  before hand and find out what it is that is important to them as parents for their child to be learning at school and if they have any thing they would like to share with me about their child.4).I would share our philosophy and mission statement  and invite them to please come to the first class with their child so they can all feel comfortable and get acquainted with the program and each other. 5). I would want to learn about their culture and history and holidays and ways they celebrate in their culture.

I hope thee will things will benefit both me and the family by helping us to connect on a professional and personal level and by  letting them know I am genuinely interested in their child's best interest and am culturally aware and embrace diversity in our classroom. Mos of all I want them to feel welcomed and comfortable enough to talk with me about any of their needs or concerns for their child..

You have completed Week 7. Please proceed to Week 8.
