Who am I as a Communicator ?
When I examined my own, my colleagues as
well as my family member’s profiles of me, I saw certain patterns. For the
communication anxiety, I was placed in three different categories. My colleague
had me in the low level, my son saw me as being in the mild range, and I saw
myself as being in the moderate category. It was interesting to see how others
perceive you, and how this effects your perception of yourself. For the verbal
aggressiveness and listening styles, I landed in the same categories’ all three
times. This showed me that I perceived myself the way that others perceive me
and that this perception has value. I see clearly that I am people oriented, an
empathetic listener, but too trusting, and fair and respectful of others
opinions. I also know see that I am not too comfortable yet at speaking in from
of a large group. I see that I am sensitive to feedback and am working on
raising my self-efficacy. This exercise helped me to raise myself efficacy as a communicator
as two other people perceived me as being a more competent communicator than I
saw myself as. I found all of this information affirming, interesting and quite delightful. Great exercise!

I think the anxiety one was a tough one for other people to do about us. We know what is going on in our bodies, we can feel the butterflies and nerves. Just thinking about getting up in front of people I feel anxious. Even if others see us get anxious about communication, it is rarely going to be something they remember about us.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth,
ReplyDeleteI am glad that people were able to confirm the communicator you are. I also found this exercise very valuable and meaningful. Communication is a very important in our field and exercises like this one can help us to be better communicators.
