Practicing Awareness of Microaggressions

I do work with staff who are from various ethnicity, but perhaps because of this they   are conscious enough to not use microaggressions. Microaggressions are most likely to come from the dominant culture . I did feel a micoraggression come from a property management lady today as she was turning down my rental application.I do believe she was trying to be professional , but when she said she would not recommend my application to the owner and was questioning why my disabled husband did not have any credit I felt insulted and answered because he is  on disability and we by used cars and do not have credit as we are too poor to qualify. She merely answered oh, and continued to let me down kindly. She said that she had other stronger applicant than us , meaning credit rules our society, and made me feel like we were just  not good enough.
Understanding miscroaggresion opened my mind to its reality, it is subtle and deadly. I am fine tuned now to its presence in out society and have become an advocate to eliminate it as a form of racism.

  1. I think you made a great point with your post and I find it sad that to some people we are judged by a number given to us. It sounds like the lady was very unprofessional and I really hate you had to experience this.

  2. Your experience reminds me of when my husband was in the Air Force and we had relocated to Florida. While looking for an apartment we had many places that would not even consider us because of being military. There are many reasons that micro aggressions happen and we do need to find a way to eliminate them. If this person was treating you this way before, you are lucky to not be living there. I’m sure you found a much better place to be!

  3. Elizabeth I am so sorry that happen to you the lady should have took your application because of your husband being disable. People just look at if it is all about them and money we as people should be concern about people that puzzle me sometimes. People do not have a concern for other race and sometime not even their own.
